THE TEAM

Carl Pointer -
Born 1988, hometown Leeds. At 15 my family moved to Spain, where I learnt Spanish, then at 19 decided to do something different with my life. An Uncle advised me to join the RAF Regiment as I was a fit guy and I volunteered for II Sqn during Basic training of which I enjoyed the live firing ranges the most. During my 3 years in the RAF Regt I have completed the field gunners and Bowman course. Completed a 6 month tour of Afghanistan as an LMG gunner and after being a member of the RAF Regiment Nordic Ski Team last year, passed my pre-para selection course and Biathlon Instructors Course with flying colours.
This year on the team I aspire to be the top shot and rank highly in the competitions amongst the GB athletes. Hopefully I perform exceptionally, beat the coach and get picked up for one of the Biathlon and cross country development squads.

Mathew Bailey
Born 1990 in Birkenhead. Moved to Holmfirth in west Yorkshire, attending Holmfirth high school achieving good grades at GCSE. Then went on to Huddersfield new college where I studied law, modern history, P.E and travel and tourism for a year before joining the RAF. I joined the RAF Regiment because I was a sporty guy and this appealed to me the most. I attested in to the RAF on the 7th October 2007, passing out on El Alamein flight on the 13th June 2008, I deployed to Iraq in Feb 2009. I subsequently deployed to Afghanistan in November 2010.on returning from Afghanistan I attended the brief on the Regt Biathlon team. I had previous alpine skiing experience so I thought I would go along and try out. I got selected and was then on the Team. In my first year of training I picked up the technique quickly but struggled with the physical side of it during the various training camps of the year. I progressed a lot technically and physically and by the time we were racing in the winter I felt good and went onto win the British novice champion title. I was then selected for National Development Squad taking place up at RAF Kinloss in Scotland which I attended in April 2012 for 3 months during which I improved a lot physically with the training I received and I am now back training with the Regt team. I hope this year to get onto the Biathlon academy and start training with the GB team then to race for Great Britain in the winter.

Grant Wilson -
Born 1995 in Livingston, Scotland. I attended primary school at Seafield primary in the village I lived in and then attended Bathgate academy later on. At Bathgate academy I gained two two’s and five three’s at standard grade. I then went on to achieve an A in engineering and a B in computing both at intermediate two level. At home I have one brother who is still at Bathgate academy and is a year and a half younger than me. I used to play rugby for about a year before I joined up and played golf every so often. I enjoy running and walking in my free time at home.
I applied for the RAF Regiment when I was just under 16 in November 2010 and started training on El-Alamein 1-11 training flight on the second of May 2011. I passed out on the 28th of October 2011. During field gunners I completed the basic bowman course and also gained my driving license. Since passing out I have completed my Pre-parachute selection course which was from the 5th – 23rd of March. After returning to the Sqn I was placed onto KAF 2, before I was selected for the Biathlon team.
