Our first day training began with me getting a nice wake up from Luke only to realise I had set my alarm on UK time and that’s why it hadn’t woken me up. We all sleepily put our sports kit on and went for our daily morning mobility session. We will be doing a 20-30 min mobility session every morning that we train so we can loosen off our muscles for a nice hard day of training and stop us getting injured. We went for a small jog by the river doing different mobility exercise’s to loosen up and headed back to the house to get the morning routine done having breakfast and wash etc.
At 08.30 we headed out for our morning training session at the Siegsdorf track, a well used nordic ski loop used by many of the biathlon teams in the area. By the time we started the temperature was in to the high twenty’s and it was looking like it was going to be a very nice day. We went at a steady pace to start with to get used to using our rollerski’s again with Coach talking to us throughout the loop pointing out technique and the best way to ski parts of the loop.
On one of the hills Coach went on ahead and filmed us one by one as we skated past so we could later review our technique so we could improve. After we had gone a bit further Coach again went on ahead and he filmed us doing another ski technique for review again later on that day. After about an hour and a half of skiing we turned around and went back the way we came. Going down on one of the longer hills we had skied up enabled us to get some good speed downhill and was a good laugh. When we got back to the minibus we loaded all our equipment and headed back to the house. After a nice lunch we sat down in the living room and reviewed the videos we had made and Coach critiqued our technique, which enabled us to identify what we needed to work on.
By the time we had finished Coach’s debrief we were all knackered. Carl and I passed out on the sofa along with Luke and all too soon we were being woken up for the afternoon training session. Coach took us to a different area (uphill again!!!) to introduce us to Classic Nordic skiing for the first time. We started off at a really slow pace getting to grips with this new style. To start with there was lots of stumbling and swearing with all of us nearly falling over a few times. After about 40 minutes of skiing uphill we were all starting to get to grips with the new technique. Again we turned around and went back the way we came but this time we just used our poles. The route was a slight decline all the way back to the minibus so it wasn’t long before we were packed up and heading back to the Traunhaus. All of us were exhausted from our first full days training and agreed that it had been a good call by Luke to get ready made Lasagne so we didn’t have long to wait for dinner. For the rest of the evening we sorted out all of our admin for the next days training and went through our skating corrections from the video.
The team as a whole are starting to look really strong and showing great potential for the future. Maybe the National Development Squad will be just around the corner for some. Who knows?
