SAC Steve Boyes - Training Diary 1 August 2011

Back into training this week after a good weekend, where the centre piece was a ‘Spectacular‘, which started on Friday night and finished sometime over the weekend (if you know what I mean!). This was a street party for the 600th anniversary of the town of Rupolding, which was kicked off by the Town Canon being fired and scaring the crap out of the Boss who started having flashbacks!!  Some of the entertainment wasn’t too bad like the Elvis impersonators who couldn‘t remember the words to classics like ‘Return to Sender‘; there were also fire jugglers who didn’t get their fingers burnt and live bands. All of this got the locals out in force and a good time was had by all

The weekend was forgotten this morning though with a 1 hour 30 minute session of hill reps on classic roller skis. We completed around 6 hill reps each with Coach Carrier recording us going up the hill to enable us to analyse our technique during lunch. Whilst my ’Classic’ technique still needs some work, I keep sliding back slightly before pushing the ski forward, I have improved in other areas such as now using my poles in the correct manner!

This afternoon was spent on the Range at the Chiemgau biathlon arena, which we will now be doing every day for the rest of the Summer. Today’s session was a ski shoot combi, a new experience for us. Basically we skied with no poles for distances from 100m to 500m to get our heart rate up to what it would be on race day; then into either the prone or standing position, firing 1 or 5 rounds and practicing getting in and out of position quickly. Hard work that really started to bring home the importance of fitness and good shooting technique.
