SAC Mathew Bailey - Race Diary 22 January 2012

All 3 Senior Novices battling on one of the many climbs
We woke up to another rainy day in Ruhpolding this morning and another race day for Luke and I. Danny and Carl were doing marshalling duties for the race today. We did morning mobility as normal then got ready to head down to the stadium Carl and Danny had to be down there at 10.00 to get ready to do some top quality marshalling so at 9.30 we headed down there. When we arrived coach was already there testing wax out for me and Luke seeing which one worked best. The snow conditions were ok, it had been raining a lot in the morning but the track was still ok to ski. The race today was a 7.5km mass start with senior novice men and juniors all racing together so at 11.50 we all headed down to the start point to get in place for the race. Luke was starting on the front row with me behind right in the middle. At 12.00 we had the whistle blast and we all set off me and Luke got a good start and we both slotted into first and second place (in the Senior Novice (SN) catergory). It was a hard course with hill after hill with very little rest points but we soon got into our race. I stayed just behind Luke for most of the race until a few lads from Australia took us on the last bit of the last lap leaving me in 6th place and Luke in 5th. On the second to last hill climb one of the army lads got just in front of me and behind Luke. At the top of the hill we came to The Wall the hardest and fastest downhill of the whole circuit. Tragedy struck for Luke and he fell on the bottom of the hill and we overtook him as he desperately tried to get back on his feet. As we come to the last hill climb the army lad was just in front and I knew I had to beat him up the hill to win the SN category so with coach screaming at the side of the track I dug deep and went past him on the hill and came in 5th overall but 3rd Brit and 1st SN with Luke coming in as 3rd SN. It was a good day’s race with Luke and I walking away with a good result.
