On Friday night Carl and I travelled from Lossiemouth down
to Edinburgh for the outdoor first aid course we were attending over the
weekend. Saturday morning we headed off to the Bonaly centre where the course
was held. After a little bit of paperwork to start with, my favourite, we got
straight into refreshing our first aid skills. We covered indoor first aid
first and looked at the basic drills for finding a casualty and then ways of
identifying what the problems were. Once we went over that a few times we moved
onto treating injuries like bleeds and even suspected neck trauma. At the end
of the day we had a quick five question test to make sure what we had learned
went in. On the Sunday we moved onto head injuries and other more life threatening
injuries. First of all we practised slings and using triangular bandages. Once
everyone grasped that we went on to improvising using what was around us, ie
jackets or shirts. After the morning in
the class room we moved outside looking at how the environment affects the
first aid that should be given. Also looked at how if there were more than one
first aider then how you could use that and distribute jobs to each person.
Once shown how, we each took it in turn to take charge of the group. To
practice further we split into two groups where half of us were casualties and
the other half first aiders who had to treat and control the situation. Then we moved onto looking at how you would
treat multiple injuries and even a mass incident. To finish off the day we had
a fifteen question test paper to complete with a minimum of ten being the pass
mark. Once they had been marked we were told everyone passed which made it even
more worth while.
